Tips for Talking to Kids about the War with Israel

Tip #1

Share limited details with kids about the war, in a developmentally appropriate way.

I.e. We are praying for extra peace in the world because there is a war in Israel.

Tip #2

Answer kids’ questions about the war in Israel to the best of your ability, not adding information that isn’t relevant to the answer at-hand.

Saying “I don’t know” is a completely valid answer.

Tip #3

Limit kids’ exposure to videos on the news or on social media, especially images that you can’t filter for them in advance.

Try and be present around kids, even in the midst of our own anxieties, as we are glued to our phones.

Tip #4

Reassure kids that they are safe.

Feel free to consult with your local mental health professionals, clergy, or pediatrician, if you have additional questions or concerns.

These tips were compiled by Rabbi Yael Buechler in October 2023.
